Luk 22:46 Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
The admonition which was first addressed to all the eleven ( Lk 22:40) is now spoken to the chosen three. While Christ was praying, the disciples had fallen asleep. They should have been watching with Him, praying for Him and for themselves so that satan would not pounce on them unawares.
When is the Christian most liable to sleep? Is it not when his temporal circumstances are prosperous? When they have troubles to take to the throne of grace, are they not more wakeful. Easy roads make sleepy travelers. It is in easy places that men shut their eyes and wander in the dreamy land of forgetfulness.
Take heed, joyous Christians, good frames are near neighbours to temptations. Be as happy as you will, only be watchful. ( Morning and evening readings)
