1Co 9:24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.
Paul uses the athletic metaphors from the Isthmian games held in Corinth every two years. The emphasis here is on the supreme efforts used by the competing athletes and not the half hearted attempts. . The winners received wreaths of pine which soon withered. They strived for that which did not last.
In the Christian race, the winners do not receive perishable crowns but imperishable ones. Christians strive for that which cannot fade. Believers commitment and enthusiasm should be more than those of the athletes because at the finish line, they will receive eternal life.We should be ready to give up all pleasures and conveniences and concentrate on serving the Lord. When we finish the race, we shall get a Victor’s crown.
