1Th 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit.
This language is taken from the way of putting out a fire. Basically, it means we are not to extinguish the influence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Fire may be put out by pouring on water or by covering it with incombustible substance or by neglecting to supply fuel ( Albert Barnes’ NT commentary)
Whenever we grieve the Holy Spirit, He draws away from us. Our zeal and joy for the things of God decreases. Sin always puts out the fire of the Spirit in our lives. But Prayers, studying the word, praise and thanksgiving will always keep the fire burning.
Remember, we have been stamped with the seal of the Holy Spirit. (Eph 1:13)
