2Sa 17:16 “Now therefore, send quickly and tell David, saying, ‘Do not spend this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily cross over, lest the king and all the people who are with him be swallowed up.’ ”
This was during Absalom’s conspiracy. God frustrated Ahithophel’ s counsel through Hushai. Ahithophel had advised Absalom to move first and overtake David and his men while they were weak and weary. He thought if David would be killed quickly, all the people would accept Absalom’s kingship.
However, Hushai new if the plan would have been implemented, it would succeed. He had to convince Absalom to delay the attack against David. After this he sent a message to David and told him not to spend the night at the fords in the desert but to cross over Jordan without fail or the king and all the people would be “swallowed up”. He thought that Absalom would disregard his advice and persue David. He had to take the necessary measures and not leave anything to chance. So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan.
If we have to avoid being ” swallowed up” , we must take the necessary measures and not leave anything to chance. We must act fast and decisively. Negligence and casual approach may lead to devastating results.
