Joh 2:17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.”
The term “it is written” was a characteristic way of affirming the inspiration of the Old Testament. This was said after Jesus made a scourge out of cords , drove out money changers, those who were selling sheep and oxen and those who were selling doves.
The ” zeal of they house” means extraordinary concern for the temple of God; intense solicitude that the worship there should be pure , and such as God would approve.
” Has eaten me up” basically means has engaged my entire attention and affection. It has surpassed all other feelings so that it may be said to be the one great absorbing affection and desire of the mind.
Christ was zealous from the onset of His ministry to the end. In this manifestation of zeal , He began and with the same zeal , ended his ministry. It is said that Peter was made up all of fire and that St Paul, in respect of his sufferings , that he was a spark of fire burning in the midst of the sea.( William Burkitt’s notes on NT)
Christian friends, the season we are in is not going to water down our zeal. The fire that God has put in our hearts will continue burning. We will remain zealous to the end!
