1Sa 17:47 “Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”
This is part of David’s speech before his combat with Goliath. While Goliath’s speech was abusive, David’s speech was full of pious trust and to God he ascribed all the glory of the triumph he anticipated.
A man went before Goliath, carrying his shield, for his own hands were full of his sword and spear. ( 1Sa 17:45)
But what arms and ammunition is David furnished with? None but what he had brought with him as a shepherd; no breastplate, nor corselet, but his plain Shepherd’s coat; no spear, but his staff, no sword nor bow, but his sling; no quiver, but his scrip; nor any arrows, but instead of them, five smooth stones. ( Mathew Henry’s commentary)
David testified that the Lord saves, but not with sword and spear. Since the battle belonged to him, He would fight and win His way. Without God’s favour, the most formidable warlike preparations will be of no avail. Pr 21:31 The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord.
