Luk 14:18 “But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’
Luk 14:19 “And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’
Luk 14:20 “Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’
Jesus gave the parable of the great banquet. This banquet was something that was happening once. It was something that couldn’t be put off to another stage in a person’s life. Yet the excuses made could have been put off.
The first man could have gone to check his field on another day. The next man could have tested his yoke of oxen yet on a different day. The gentleman who had married would have spared some moments to attend the banquet. In each case, the guests would have attended if they wanted to.
Excuses will always pop up where priorities are misplaced. Even after God has provided all the resources and time for us to have accomplished some tasks, we still give excuses why we have not done so. When asked why we are not where God expects us to be, what we give are excuses not reasons. Excuses are not excusable!
