3Jo 1:2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
The above remarks assume a dichotomy; that there are two substantive entities that make up the whole person. The first is the body which upon death returns to the dust and secondly, the nonmaterial self which if regenerated goes to heaven or to the abode of the wicked dead. Others have a trichotomous view – body , spirit and soul.
That not withstanding, John prays that Gaius may prosper not only in respect to material wealth and health but also in nonmaterial self. It is not very common to find those enjoying material affluence and health giving due diligence to spiritual concerns.
Believers must aspire to prosper not only in matters of this life but much more so in matters of faith, wisdom and knowledge. We accumulate spiritual capital by prayer, listening, reading and meditating on the word of God. What happens in the physical is largely determined by our spiritual capital.
