Psalms 40:1-3 I waited patiently for the Lord ; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him .
The psalmist had been plunged into a horrible pit and into miry clay out of which he could not come out. This pit could have been either sickness of his body , the insults of his enemies, some inward disquiet and perplexity of spirit , great grievances, despondency of spirit under the sense of Gods withdrawing, and prevailing doubts and fears about the eternal state. ( Mathew Henry Commentary)
These are indeed horrible pits and miry clay and have been so to many . But even with such unfavourable set up ,David purposed not to complain or grumble before the Lord but to wait patiently. The Lord inclined his ear towards his cry and pulled him out of the miry bog. He substituted his cry and sinking feet with a new song and a stable firm anchor.
As we offer our supplications and request to God concerning our miry and horrible set ups,its profitable to wait patiently for his vindication. Many are tempted to wait while running hence they fail to reap the desired results. May we not only wait upon the Lord but also wait patiently.
