Mat 14:27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” Mat 14:28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” Mat 14:29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
This was during the fourth watch of the night. The disciples were alone at the middle of the sea being tossed by the waves for the wind was contrary. Jesus appeared walking on the sea and they were troubled because they thought they were seeing a ghost. Jesus spoke to them saying ” be of good cheer, it’s is i ; do not be afraid “.
But Peter requested Jesus to command him to walk to where he was if indeed he was the one. After the command was given , Peter came out of the boat and started walking on water. When the challenge of the boisterous wind came and he began to sink, he called out to Jesus who immediately stretched out his hand and caught him.
The winds are still blowing and the boisterous waves still buffeting our lives. Christ’s words are still true: Take courage! , Do not be afraid . May we take courage in the face of the winds and the waves and may each one of us step out of the boat to follow Jesus.
