1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Being vigilant means you are awake. A vigil is when people stay up all night. A good example is the night guard who remains awake the whole night waiting for that person to attack.
Unfortunately, many believers are naive. We think that everyone’s intentions are good. Many see the world through rose – coloured glasses and don’t realise there are bad people and evil forces laying in wait for them.
We must exercise careful circumspection as one does when in danger. We are to be on our guard against the wiles and the power of the evil one( Albert Barnes’ NT Commentary). The vigilant Christian is the one on the lookout for the enemies of his/her spiritual , emotional and physical wellbeing.
