Mar 7:27,28 But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.”
A woman who was Greek but born in Syria Phoenicia ( Syrophoenician ) had a daughter who was possessed by an evil spirit. She came , fell at Jesus feet and begged him to drive out the spirit. Jesus replied that it was not right to take children’s bread and throw it to the dogs. The woman asserted that even though dogs did not eat with the children at the table, they did eat the crumbs that fell on the floor.
The woman accepted the priority of Jesus mission to the Jews but was keen to point out that Israel’s privileges did not exclude Gentiles from enjoying the overflow. The term dogs was not derogatory or diminutive but referred to house dogs that slept on masters laps. It merely implied that Jesus had a higher obligation to serve the fellow Jews first.
God’s blessings are so vast that even the smallest fractions of it are satisfying. Through Christ, all Abraham’s blessings are ours. Through Christ, all the nations of the earth have been Blessed.
