Rut 1:16 But Ruth said: “Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; for wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.
Rut 1:17 Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”
Naomi pressed on Orpah and Ruth to stay in Moab as she prepared to go back to go back to Bethlehem. She argued that their prospect for remarriage was best among their own people. She assumed that no family in Bethlehem would be interested in Marrying Moabite women. Orpah took her Leave of Naomi but Ruth clung to her.
Yet Ruth was not easily dissuaded by her. She bound herself to go with Naomi and lodge with her. She left her country, her people and her religion for a greater purpose – she sealed her commitment with a self – imprecatory oath, taken in the personal name of Naomi’s God Yahweh. ( Holman’s Study Bible, NKJV)
It is worth noting that the Lord was pursuing bigger plans for the two than just bringing together the two individuals. Their story forms the bigger plan to provide the Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Like Ruth, if we will have a bigger generational impact, we must learn to forsake some short term self gratification gains for a lasting impact.
