Gen 25:33,34 Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of this day.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.
Esau’s birthright would have included a double portion or even two – thirds of the material inheritance. The package also included honor and responsibility of the Abrahamic covenant with Yahweh. This agreement was binding because Jacob made Esau swear.
Esau’s impatient, appetite driven life , contrasted sharply with Jacob’s shrewd, calculating character. ( Holman’s study Bible) . Esau knowingly and willingly traded his birthright for a chance to eat some red lentil stew. Esau viewed his birthright with contempt or even as worthless.
And this could be the same way we treat what God has put in our hands to profit ourselves and our families for generations. We are unable to momentarily hold – tough when pressed by temporary needs. We end up losing generational blessings because of trading what is profitable with unprofitable. We must commit ourselves to take care of what is in us and what God has given us so that it can be a blessing to us and the generations to come.
