Phi 3:8 But indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ
What do we value most? Could it be our Education, our relationships, our assets, our bank accounts, our careers and professions, our reputations ? Paul must have carefully considered the benefits of all these and compared them with the surpassing value of knowing Christ. ( Knowing Jesus)
Paul had to do away with all that he had considered to be of great value (profitable) to him. He had to do away with his legalistic righteousness, his Jewish background, his family, his career ,his past accomplishments and his strict obedience to all the rules and regulations of the Jewish law. Whatever was to his profit, he now considered them as rubbish ( loss) for the sake of knowing Christ.
There is nothing on this earth more profitable than knowing Jesus Christ personally. Nothing else can give a person salvation and eternal life.( Applied New Testament commentary, Thomas Hale). Renouncing all means that, if we must choose between Christ and anything else, we will choose Christ ( John Piper). Jesus is more valuable than everything in the world put together. If you have Jesus, you have everything .
