Gen 26:20-22 But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him. Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah. And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, “For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”
Esek , Sitnah and Rehoboth is a series of three wells which were used to show what was happening in Isaac’s relationship with his neighbours. Esek , means contention. When he dug Esek, there was a contention of ownership between him and the herdsmen of Gerar. Instead of giving up, he went a head and dug Sitnah.
Sitnah means “enmity”. The second well brought enmity between him and the occupants of the land. Although Isaac had the manpower to easily overcome the Philistines , he chose not to fight over that one too but instead went on and dug Rehoboth. Rehoboth means ” broad places” which represents rest, peace and happiness. At last, there was no dispute. Isaac became fruitful in the land.
Isaac was a very industrious man who never got discouraged easily. Nobody was born to be a failure. You must purpose not to be discouraged when things happen contrary to your expectations. The greatest fulfilment in life is rising up every time you fall! You must purpose never to lose the enthusiasm. You must persist until you succeed.
