Gen 9:23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.
After the great floods, Noah begun to be a farmer and planted a vineyard. Then he drunk the wine and was drunk and became uncovered in his tent. One of his sons, Ham, saw the nakedness of his father, and instead of covering him, went and told his two brothers, who were outside.
Japheth and Shem demonstrated their nobler natures by reacting to their Father’s condition far differently from Ham. First, they did not look upon their Father’s shameful condition. Second , they covered the nakedness of their father, thus ending his shame ( Holman Study Bible, NKJV Edition) .
Shem and Japheth did not only refuse to see, but they were also determined to secure the situation so that no one else would see. They did not go in their Father’s tent, shaking him and demanding an explanation from him. We should by all means endeavor to cover the nakedness of others. If there is nothing you can do about it, please don’t go broadcasting it!* Disgrace is placed upon those who disgrace others.
