Mat 5:41 “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
In Jesus’ time , Israel was a Roman colony. According to Roman law, a Roman soldier could demand a resident of a colony to carry his military baggage as far as one mile. After that, the soldier was supposed to find another man to carry his things for the next one mile. If the soldier pressed for more than this, he risked fostering dangerous resentment among the subjected people.
But in contrast to this, Jesus taught his disciples that they should carry their oppressors baggage out of obligation for one mile, but then exceed the soldier’s expectations by going a second mile as an act of love and service.
Jesus taught that Christians must be willing to do more than their duty requires. Believers who embrace the principle of the extra mile by going beyond the obvious minimum requirements get promoted , enjoy the goodwill of man and God and are highly blessed . Worldly men do only their duty; Christians must be ready and willing to do more!
