Dan 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the kingโs delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Daniel was among the princes who were taken into captivity in Babylon. He was among those who were chosen to serve King Nebuchadnezzar. Those chosen young men were to be the brightest and gifted in all spheres of academia and other areas. The King’s steward gave special delicacies and drinks to this special group of privileged captives.
Despite the pressure for a young man to fit in the trends, he made a purposeful choice of not defiling himself with the king’s delicacies . He set the standard by which others followed. God set him and the other Hebrew boys apart and gave them extra ordinary knowledge and expertise that they were ten times better than those who enjoyed the delicacies. The King’s steward ordered the delicacies be withdrawn.
There are many things that are enticing us to compromise and let go off the word of God and our values. Let us make a conscious choice and purpose not to defile ourselves with “Babylonian delicacies”. We must have clear boundaries on matters that glorifies God and those that defile us . It is crucial to keep a firm grip on the gospel of Jesus Christ, less we be drawn away by the enticements of the environment around us.
