1 Kings 17:12 So she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat, and die.”
Elijah the prophet had proclaimed a drought in the land. During this season God divinely provided for him thus buffered from the stings of the biting draught. God commanded him to relocate to Zarephath, where a widow would provide for him. It is ironic that God would choose a widow as a provider. The widow was vulnerable and at the verge of desperation as she was preparing herself to die from the wreckage of the prevailing famine.
The widow’s provision had dried up and she saw the end of her survival. It seemed that they widow’s only possession was her son whom she could not sustain thus she resigned to fate of the raging draught. It was an injurious scarcity season where all resources were depleted. She saw death and was ready to die with her son. She had come a dead end literally.
In His divine wisdom,God sent His servant Elijah to perform a miracle of sustenance to this woman whose fate seemed to have conspired against her. God is able to turn situations that seems “unrepairable”. If he did it for this widow, you are a candidate of a miracle in times of financial draught when nothing goods seems to come your way. There is hope in times of economic despondency.
