Mat 5:39 “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.,
Turning the other cheek is a Christian doctrine from the sermon on the mount that refers to injury without revenge. The phrase ” slap on the face” is a metaphor for unexpected injury or offence. The ” slap” makes reference to personal slights of any kind.
In this particular context, Jesus was repudiating the Old Testament Torah law that advocated the teaching of ” an eye for an eye ( Lev 24:19-21). Anyone who injured their neighbour was to be injured in the same manner; fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, death for death etc. Jesus taught Christians not to retaliate when wronged.
Turning the other cheek is a better option than dueling ( Pre – arranged combat to settle a disagreement). It is a Christian doctrine that promotes non violence and forgiveness . Responding to hatred with love and ignoring personal slights is not only a mark of maturity but also a display of the supernatural power of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit .
