Mat 21:18-19 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.
19 – And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.
From the way the tree appeared, it had all the traits of a productive tree. The leaves were green and from afar, it could attract you to go for some fruits. Unfortunately what appeared attractive was not the reality. May believers are like that. They have every attribute of a christian but when it comes to productivity nothing can be gotten from them.
Why did Jesus curse the fig tree? This was not a thoughtless angry act, but an acted-out parable. Jesus was showing his anger at religion without substance. Just as the fig tree looked good from a distance but was fruitless at close examination, so the temple looked impressive at glance, but its sacrifices and other activities were hollow. This is because they were not done to worship God with the sincerity it deserves .(Life Application Bible)
How does God and others perceive us? When He and others draws near to us, can there be found any fruit that can satisfy the onlookers? We are supposed to be productive in every aspects of our lives and lets not be like that fig tree. What we depict should correctly corresponds with what we produce. In so doing, our appearance will always be the reality but not vise versa.
