Jn 12:12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
Jn 12:13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna“ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the King of Israel!”*
Jn 12:14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,
Jn 12:15 “Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
During this age, when kings would enter their into their territories, they came in riding on horses accompanied by a calvary signifying victory after war and displaying the power and glory of their presence. This was a sight to behold as trumpets would be sounded alerting the people of their arrival.
Jesus on the other hand arrived being carried by a donkey, signifying simplicity and humility. People laid their clothes and palm leaves singing Hosanna. Jesus did not come in the name of the Roman emperor which was oppressive to the Jews but in the name of the Lord. He who is the King of kings came in as the prince of peace.
As we celebrate the Easter week, we acknowledge that this New King is coming in peace and humility. He is not coming with a rod of condemnation and judgement, but coming in love, humility and peace. Just as a donkey is a beast of burden, he is coming in to carry your heavy burdens and give you rest. Will you allow him today.
