1Sa 4:18 And it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell from the seat backwards at the side of the gate, and his neck broke and he died, for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
Eli, the high priest was sitting by the road. He was old, heavy and blind. He wanted to hear the initial reports about the fighting because he was extremely worried. As soon as he heard that the Ark had been captured, he fainted and his large frame tipped backward off the chair and he broke his neck and died. The wife of Phinehas, was pregnant. When she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth, for her pains came upon her and died.
At the bottom of our screens ,news flash runs across, BREAKING NEWS. This means that an important announcement of something amazing, terrible, interesting,
incredible, troubling, or heart-breaking has occurred. Some people are privileged to be first hand witnesses and claims the pertinent rights of the occurrence. With the bragging that comes with the same, if not well handled ,such news can break both the messeger and the recipients.
Handling weighty ,fragile and sensitive information requires God given wisdom to both the carrier and the recipient lest it backfires and leave a trail of damages and destruction. Carrying news as first hand witness is good but needs to be done with caution for it might be a land mine full of undetonated explosives.
