Gen 13:1, 10
[1]And Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot went with him, into the south of Canaan.
[10]And Lot raised his eyes, and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere, (this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah), like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as you come to Zoar.
Our material wealth, social status, or even self – righteousness can hinder our spiritual journey. Lot’s story is a vivid example of the dangers of prioritizing worldly wealth over spiritual integrity. He chose the fertile plains of Sodom and Gomorrah for his livestock, valuing immediate gain over long-term spiritual well-being. This decision led to his eventual loss of everything when God judged the cities.
“To keep a lot and lose a lot” is an invitation to reassess our values and redirect our focus on things of eternal value. Lot’s story warns us of the perils of choosing material wealth over spiritual well-being. Let us choose to invest in what truly lasts; our relationship with God and His eternal kingdom.
The rich young ruler approached Jesus seeking eternal life. He had kept all the commandments but struggled with one crucial thing —his attachment to his wealth. Jesus’ invitation to sell his possessions and follow Him highlighted the difficulty of letting go of earthly riches to gain eternal life. When told to sell his possession, he went away sad. (Mark 10:17-27). Bible exhorts us to store up for ourselves treasures in heaven where thieves can’t break and moths can’t destroy.
