“Therefore take care how you listen, for whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever does not have, from him will be taken even what he seems to have”.
Luke 8:18
Listening is more than just a passive act; it is an active engagement with God’s word. In the context above Jesus has just finished telling the Parable of the Sower, where different types of soil represent different ways people receive God’s word. The soil that bears fruit represents those who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a good crop.
In our spiritual journey, listening plays a vital role. It is not just about hearing words; it is about understanding and applying the truth that God speaks into our lives. To truly listen is to allow God’s word to penetrate our hearts, challenge our thoughts, and transform our lives. Those who listen with an open heart and a desire to understand will be given more. Their understanding will grow, and their lives will reflect God’s truth.
To “take care how you listen” is a call to attentiveness, openness, and responsiveness to God’s word. Let us examine our hearts and remove any barriers that hinder us from listening well. Let us cultivate a heart of humility, a desire for God’s truth, and a consistent commitment to His word.
