Luke 1:28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
Luke 1:29 And when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at his statement and wondered what kind of greeting this could be.
The scene of the Annunciation is one of awe and wonder. The Angel Gabriel appears to Mary, a young woman in Nazareth with greetings that are both startling and profound. This moment encapsulates a divine encounter that would forever change the course of history. Mary’s initial reaction to angel Gabriel’s greeting was one of fear and confusion. It’s not every day that an angel appears with a message from God. This greetings were unexpected, and it shattered the ordinary silence of her life.
Mary’s reaction is described as being “greatly troubled” and filled with wonder. These emotions reflect her humanity and her humility. To be greatly troubled is not to lack faith but an acknowledgement of the mystery and enormity of what God is doing. Similarly, we often find ourselves in situations where God speaks to us in unexpected ways—through events, people, or moments of deep introspection.
As we reflect on Mary’s encounter with the angel, let us also reflect on how God “greets” us in our lives. For all believers ,these are our greatest greetings this season! For you also have found favor with God. You have found grace, you have been gifted and the Lord is with you.
