Luke.1.38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. (KJV)
In our today’s text, we encounter one of the most powerful declarations of faith in the Scriptures. Mary, a young virgin, encountered a divine message. This message would forever change her life. She responded to the angel Gabriel with these words:
“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”
This is a simple yet a profound statement that reveals key aspects of faith. When practiced, it can inspire and challenge us in our walk with God. She recognized her role as a servant of the Lord. She acknowledged that her life was not her own but belonged to God. This trust in God’s sovereignty is the foundation of true faith. Even when the future is uncertain, faith declares, “God, You are in control.”
Mary’s faith reminds us that God often calls us to tasks that seem impossible. Imagine a virgin without having intimacy with a man giving birth! Like Mary, we may feel unqualified or uncertain. God doesn’t require us to have all the answers. When God’s plans stretch us, let us say, “Let it be to me according to Your word.” May our faith, like Mary’s, open the door for God to do extraordinary things in and through us.
