2 Sa12:20,21 So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate.
Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food.”
When something tragic happens, i.e the end of a relationship, demise of a loved one, loss of a job , a relocation, etc, we normally hear of the need for a “closure”. The American Physiological Association defines closure as a the “act, achievement, or sense of completing or resolving something.” When we say a person has a need to achieve closure, we typically mean they are seeking the answers or resolution that they feel they need to move on (Closure Psychology- Better Help editorial team)
David had done everything humanly possible to ensure the child lived. He had pleaded with God for the child. He had fasted and would lay on the ground all night. 2Sa12:17 So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them. But when the child died on the seventh day, he arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, changed clothes, went into the house of the Lord and worshipped, went into his house and requested that he be served with food. This was a big surprise to many.
The end of one thing marks the beginning of another. What you do with what has happened to you matters. There is a time and a season for everything under the sun. Don’t allow a season of mourning to become a lifetime of mourning. What you do with what has happened can either make an already bad situation worse or you can decide to bring it to a closure. Like David, there is nothing you can do to reverse the situation. The best you can do is to go to the house of the Lord, worship him and trust him to give you the grace to move on. You need to bring the matter to a closure.
