Job.38.4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much.
Job.38.5 Do you know how its dimensions were determined and who did the surveying? (NLT)
Though being righteous, Job endured unimaginable suffering. He lost His wealth, his health and his children. We find him initially accepting his suffering but as pain persisted he began questioning God. What made it worse is when his friends came to comfort him. They offered explanations and even suggested that his suffering was as a result of his sins. Job, deep in his heart was very much aware that he had lived a righteous life.
It’s with the above conviction that Job demanded answers from God. When God speaks in Job 38: 3-41, He provided no answers that Job had demanded. What followed was a series of questions highlighting His power and wisdom. One such question is in our text today.”Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?” Here God is reminding Job of his sovereignty and the vastness of His creation. God owes us no explanation. His purposes are beyond human comprehension and He doesn’t need to explain himself because His wisdom is perfect.
This life offers diverse challenges and suffering that at times does not make sense. In such moments, we cry to God and even ask “why me Lord? “. Job’s story reminds us that God owes us no explanation. His ways are higher that ours and our trust in Him must not be based on our understanding of His plans. Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
