And he said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD”. And suddenly the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind split the mountains, and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD. But the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake came, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire appeared, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still small voice. And it came about, when Elijah heard it, that he covered his face in his cloak and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And then a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 1 Kings 19:11-13
Hearing God’s whisper requires us to cultivate a relationship with Him through prayer, meditation on His Word, and a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. One of the most common struggles for believers is discerning between God’s voice, our own thoughts, and the influence of the world. It’s important to remember that God’s voice aligns with His character and His Word. If what we are sensing contradicts scripture or leads us into fear or confusion, it’s not from God.
God’s voice is not always found in the dramatic moments of life. It’s often found in the stillness; in the gentle whisper that follows the noise. In a world that is constantly demanding our attention, we must be intentional about making space to hear the calling of God in the midst of chaos. A.W. Tozer said, “The one who does not expect God to speak will discount every single time God does speak.” We must have an expectation that God is speaking and a readiness to listen when He does. To hear the gentle whisper of God, we need to turn down the volume of everything else. This might mean creating daily moments of silence, reading the scripture without distractions, or spending quiet time in nature where we can reflect on God’s presence.
Like Elijah, we may be surrounded by winds, earthquakes, and fires, but God is there, waiting to speak to us in the quiet moments. If we take time to listen, we will hear His voice, guiding us, comforting us and leading us in His perfect will. Faith opens our ears to hear what the Spirit is saying. When we become accustomed to fine-tuning into God’s whisper, we begin to recognize it in the simplest of circumstances. God speaks through His Word, through nature, through the quiet convictions of the Holy Spirit and through the people around us.
