Num 22:28-34 And the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”
And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a fool of me. I wish there was a sword in my hand, for I would kill you right now!” And the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, which you have ridden your whole life to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” And he said, “No”. Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way with his sword drawn in his hand. And he bowed his head, and fell prostrate on his face
The angel of the lord clearly stated that Balaam’s behavior is not right and that God was against him. “Your way is perverse before me”. In 2 Pet 2:16, Peter describes Balaam’s behavior as “madness”. He was behaving like a crazy man. Yes indeed, is it not madness to go on in a way that is not God’s way for the sake of financial benefits?
How many faithful servants ,workers and laborers have been stricken and fired by “Balaam” for failure to comply and compromise to shoddy and unclean deals? Some, like the donkey, have carried, sided and stood with their bosses all through but near “death” experience with an angel, brings an instant disobedience.
Some tasks or commands we give the “donkey” may provoke an angel with a burning sword into action to save or destroy both .Sudden disobedience may be an alarm for looming danger as Peter puts it , “a mute donkey spoke with a man’s voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.” (2 Peter 2:16) Don’t blame the donkey, when actually it is for your safety and protection.
