Mat 11:29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
The yoke is used in the Bible as an emblem of bondage or slavery. The Jews lived under the yoke of the law. The Jewish scribes frequently spoke about the yoke of the law and the ceremonies that were imposed upon them. They were obliged to obey hundreds of regulations. If they broke even one, it was counted as if they had broken the whole law.
Jesus freed us from the yoke of the law but gave us His yoke. To obey Jesus is not a burden because He is our friend, our saviour and our shepherd. “If therefore the son shall set you free, you shall be free indeed ” ( Joh 8 :36) It is easier to be a Christian than a sinner. “Of all the yokes imposed on men, that of the Redeemer is the lightest ” ( Albert Barnes NT commentary)
