Num 14:44 But they presumed to go up to the mountaintop; nevertheless, neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed from the camp.
Num 14:45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and attacked them, and drove them back as far as Hormah.
The Israelites found themselves on the very borders of the promised land. Because of their rebellion, they heard God say that they should not enter it but instead they were to be “consumed by a forty years wandering in the desert”.
However, they were determined to render vain the decree which had gone forth concerning them by forcing their way into Canaan. They accordingly went up and were cut down by their enemies. Why? God was not with them.
Christian friends, sometimes because of our positions and affluence , we normally attempt to do some things without involving God. We leave Yahweh out of our plans and machinations forgetting that at the end only God’s purposes will be established.
Presumption and self sufficiency is detestable before the Lord. ( Adam Clarke commentary) Any attempt to launch out in conquest of ” the land ” without the Lord’s blessings will be futile.
