Jam 4:13-15 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ” if it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
This is a glaring example of practical atheism. It is most likely that the merchants referred to engaged in distant trade and for this purpose made long journeys to trading cities like Alexandria, Antioch, Ephesus , Corinth etc…Bloomseld
The most unfortunate thing is that they did not take God into account. They went ahead to fix a definite time; designated the exact period during which they would remain and when they would leave all without any reference to the will of God.( Albert Barnes’ Commentary)
Christian friends, we must involve God in all our plans. We must never forget that even when we plan and plant the seed, it is God who gives the harvest. Every plan must be made with submission to divine Providence. We ought to refer all our actions, our enterprises and undertakings to the will of God because tomorrow is in His hands.
