DON’T DEFEND HIM; REPRESENT HIM.

Luk 9:54-56 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.”For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s
lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.

This was in regard to a Samaritan village that refused to receive Jesus. This was not received kindly by two of Jesus “diehard” supporters. James and John( sons of thunder), wondered whether these inhospitable and hostile Samaritans knew exactly how powerful Jesus was.

In their zeal , and taking the example of prophet Elijah (2ki 1:9-12), suggested that they destroy the Samaritans by calling fire from Heaven. Jesus rebuked them because their suggestion came from the spirit of revenge and anger and not the Spirit of love and forgiveness.

Christian friends, our attitude should be like that one of Christ. Even when we are going through hostile provocation, we should call for grace from heaven but not ” fire”. The son of man did not come to destroy men’s life but to save them. Let us not be tempted to defend Him; let’s represent Him, for we are Christ’s ambassadors. ( 2Co 5:20)
