Mat 18:32 “Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.
Mat 18:33 ‘Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’
Jesus told the parable of the unmerciful servant to illustrate his teaching on forgiveness. The unmerciful servant owed the king Ten thousand talents( several million dollars) . When he could not pay, the king ordered that he and his family be sold as slaves. But when the servant begged for more time, the king had pity and forgave him. He also cancelled the entire debt.
The first servant went to another servant who owed him a hundred denarii, that is a few dollars. This servant did not show any mercy to the second servant. Instead he went and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.
When the king heard this, he withdrew his forgiveness from the wicked unmerciful servant and put him in prison until he paid what he owed.
The debt we owed our heavenly father was so big that we could not pay it back no matter how much time was given. Our good works could also not settle the account. But God , in his mercy forgave us and is still doing so. How can we then, who have received such great forgiveness fail to forgive others? ( Applied New Testament commentary, Thomas Hale)
