Mat 25:7 “Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.
Mat 25:8 “And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’
This is part of the parable of the ten virgins. The bridegroom tarried and all the ten slept. According to the Jewish custom, the bridesmaids would go out to welcome the bridegroom on the arrival. When the bridegroom arrived, the five ,after trimming their wicks realized that their lamps could not light because they did not have the oil.
For the wick to consistently burn, it should thoroughly be soaked in oil. Dry wicks burn unevenly and produces a lot of smoke. When the wick burns, it accumulate a charred dead end at the top. This is what makes the trimming necessary.
We must keep ourselves trimmed by thoroughly studying the word of God. The oil represents the Holy Spirit. If we fail to trim we will always be “smoky” and burn unevenly. Without the Holy Spirit our lamps will be dry and will easily go off.
