2Ti 2:20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 2Ti 2:21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.
Paul states that in well to do houses there would be containers made of different materials, used for different purposes and given different roles to accomplish. Silver and gold are the most expensive and desirable vessels for use. Wood and clay were materials used for everyday vessels like cups, jars and pitchers.
Containers for “honorable use” were those made of silver and gold and were used during special meals and events. Those that were “dishonorable ” were made of clay and wood and were used for everyday activities. Paul exhorted Timothy to focus on cleansing/ purifying himself from what was “dishonourable” in order to be a vessel of honorable use.
If we keep ourselves pure, we will be special utensils for honorable use . Those that are not ready for Master’s use are compared to wooden and earthenware vessels. Those that are ready for Master’s use are compared to gold and silverware items. “If a man cleanses himself, he will be an instrument for noble purpose, made holy and useful for the Master’s use.”
