Est 4:16 “Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.”
The Jews were in real trouble. Haman had maliciously obtained permission from the king to have all the Jews wiped out – they were to destroy, kill and annihilate all Jews – young and old, women and little children on a single day.( Est 3:13)
Mordecai sent to Esther the whole account of the matter and charged her to intercede with the king. The law was express, and all knew it, that whosoever came to the king uncalled should be put to death.
Esther resolved that whatever it might cost her, she was going to apply to the king after praying and fasting for three days. She knew it was the practice of good people, in extraordinary cases, to join fasting with prayer. And Esther obtained favour before the king!
The statement ” if I perish I perish ” was said not in despair but in a holy resolution to do her duty and trust God for speedy resolution. How often are we willing to sacrifice our conveniences, comfort, time, energy, resources and even risk our own lives in order to do our duties to God and to others? Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed by our heavenly father.
