2Ki 4:3 Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors–empty vessels; do not gather just a few. 2Ki 4:6 Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased.
This is one of the most spectacular provisions recorded in the Bible. The widow’s husband had left a big debt and the creditors wanted to ” auction ” the widow’s sons in order to recover what was owed to them. This incident revealed the power of God in relieving the hurts and pains that are inevitable in an increasing godless society.
Upon realization that she had some little oil in her house, Elisha instructed her to go borrow some vessels from all her neighborhood. She was not to gather just a few; She was to gather as many as the circumstances prevailing would allow. Her future depended on how much empty vessels she would gather. After shutting her self and her sons in , they poured the oil into the vessels until no vessel was left.
If she had more vessels, the oil would not have stopped pouring. The oil stopped pouring because she did not have any remaining vessels. God will give us what we ask of him according to our abilities and capacity to absorb such. We must build our capacities, sharpen our skills and talents if we want more of God’s blessings.
