Gen 35 :5-7And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. And he built an altar there and called the place El Bethel, because there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.
A haven is a place of peace, refuge and favourable conditions .* Jacob was on a journey to Bethel under God’s instruction. The purpose of the journey was to raise an altar to God who had appeared to him while fleeing from his brother Esau. As he fled in terror of his brother God had appeared to him and was with him all the way. He was returning to thank God for bailing him out of distress and seeing him through.
As he prepared to meet God, he had a task to do. As the head of the household, he had to lead the family in three aspects. First they had to put away the foreign Gods. Secondly they had to purify themselves and thirdly change their garments. They were not just to appear before God haphazardly but meet the status of God’s righteousness. This guaranteed them maximum security
As they journeyed and traversed cities, they were prone to attacks from hostile communities.
The striking thing was that God ambushed terror upon the cities that were all around them giving them ample protection in the journey to their destiny. Their security was guaranteed. As we raise an altar to God upholding His Righteousness, He will ensure that we are safe from any attack of the enemy. He will be our refuge and grant us peace from all sides. Nothing will sabotage our mission to destiny!
