Mat 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
The heart is the control center of our lives. Before anything is actualized both verbally or physically, it must first be processed by the heart. Our deeds and words portrays to a large extent who actually is calling the ” shot’s in our life; whether it is God or Mammon.
The verse does not call for renunciation of wealth but it’s a warning against the idolization of the pursuit of money. Money ( Mammon) here means any kind of worldly treasure: land, house, animals, family, education, job, authority, fame. ( Applied New Testament Commentary, Thomas Hale) Anything that takes the place of God in our lives becomes an idol.
Our hearts cannot be equally divided between the matters of heaven and earth. We should make Jesus the sole proprietor of our hearts. We must dethrone ourselves and everything else that takes his place in our lives and enthrone him. Our main obligation should be first to seek the kingdom of God with all it’s righteousness and all the other things will be added to you.(Mat 6:33)
