Isa 40:1 “Comfort, yes, comfort My people!” says your God.
Isa 40:2 “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned; for she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.”
Though the hearer of God’s word is not outrightly identified, it’s best to see these words directed to Prophet Isaiah. God’s people were proceeding to the so called ” Babylonian captivity “. The word addresses Isaiah as if he was living at the time of the future exile. He tells him to speak to Jerusalem (Israelites) in such a way as to remove the troubles of the heart; to furnish consolation and joy ( godtube.com)
And he gives those in exile a message of hope; that there is a cessation of warfare – that her warfare is ended. In addition to this, there is no more enmity between them and God, a pardon without which they would have no hope. And lastly he promises abundant blessings as a result of their sufferings. God was going to uphold his people until they saw Him!
Its true we have gone through hard times. By the grace of God, we went through devastating times during the
Covid – 19 pandemic. Then came the Russian – Ukrainian war that pushed up the inflation rate making life unbearable to many . But we have a message of hope, ” comfort , yes, comfort my people, your warfare is ended, your iniquity is pardoned . *After the great turmoil, God will usher in a season of abundant blessings.
