1Co 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful; all things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.
“Everything is permissible for me” was a common saying among the Corinthian believers. This was a saying that was used to justify all sorts of forbidden activities like eating meat devoted to idols and a variety of immoral sexual activities.
While it is true that believers are set free from following legalistic rules about what to eat and drink and they are washed by the blood of Jesus, the Corinthians were using the saying to justify ungodly living . Paul countered the saying by adding ” not everything was beneficial “. Even though some activities might not be a sin and therefore legally permissible, they might not be beneficial for a person to do it.
As believers, we must measure our choices by their spiritual benefits. If our freedom will create negative consequences in our relationship with God , the church and other believers, then we must take this into consideration before we act. Some seemingly wholesome activities we engage in might not be beneficial.
