1Cor.6.12 – All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
Paul writing to the church of Corinthians is addressing on the attitude and the rights of members. Some of them were using their God given freedom to do some questionable activities which were morally wrong to them and to others.
We find that, some Christians were excusing their sins by saying that:- (i) Christ had taken away all sins and so they lived as they pleased. (ii) What they were doing wasn’t strictly forbidden by the scripture. Paul answered both these excuses by telling them that even if Jesus Christ had taken away our sin, this wasn’t a license to go on doing what we know is wrong. Some actions are not sinful in themselves, but they are not appropriate because they can control our lives and lead us away from God. Finally some actions may hurt others. Remember, anything we do that hurt others rather than help them is not right .(Life Application Bible)
Christian friends, there is a need to exercise discernment and restraint in our various choices. This is because, while we have freedom, not everything we are free to do is necessary, beneficial or in line with God’s will. We should therefore not allow anything to master our lives. In the pursuit of our freedom, we should ponder this question:- Is whatever I’m doing or I’m about to do constructive to my life, that of others and even the entire body of Jesus Christ?
