Psa 42:5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance.
You are an unending conversation with your self. You are talking to yourself all the time, interpreting, organizing and analyzing what’s going on inside you and around. The point is you are constantly involved in an internal conversation that greatly influences the things you decide, say and do ( Weekly Devotional with Paul Tripp)
The Psalmist is yearning for God in the midst of distress. He tries to reassure himself by asking himself two questions which he also answers. He was speaking to himself in an attempt to bring comfort and security. In answer to the questions focusing on his depression, he literary commands himself to hope in God. The point the Psalmist seems to be making is that there is no reason for his depression if God was his help(Holman Study Bible)
What do we focus on when we talk to ourselves? Whatever issues we address within ourselves should not be allowed to terrorise us by magnifying the problems. Like David, we should see the possibility of receiving help from our heavenly father. When we are happy, we should also focus and direct our internal energies to worship!
