Luk 9:61 Still another said, ” I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go and say good – by to my family “.
Luk 9:62 Jesus replied, ” No one who puts his hand on a plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.
Jesus warned his would be followers first to count the cost before committing to follow him. Despite the many rewards that were awaiting them , it was going to be a mandatory requirement for them to give up what they may have considered of great value in order to serve him diligently.
One man wanted to follow Jesus but first wanted permission to go and bid farewell to his family. Definitely, the process of detaching from his family would have taken a while. This man’s words were an excuse to delay, possibly for years, his responsibility to follow Jesus. He wanted to follow Jesus at his convenience. Jesus replied using the metaphor of an oxen and a plow; that it was impossible to plow straight if one puts his hands on a plow and keeps looking backwards.
We cannot serve God effectively if we are not committed to do so. Our desire to love him,to serve him in our places of worship, and in the area of our calling may amount to nothing if there is no commitment. Lack of commitment is the reason why the churches are full of believers who are not fruitful and not zealous in kingdom matters . Christian friends, people may not recognize your efforts and will not reward you., but God is not unjust and he will reward your commitment and dedication to his cause.
