Gen 8:20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. Gen 8:21 And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.
The word altar comes from the latin word ” altarium” meaning “high” and also to the Latin adolere which means “to ritually burn or sacrifice”.An altar is a sacred place for sacrifices and gifts offered to God ( Vocabulary. com). It is a usually raised structure or a place on which sacrifices are offered or incense burned in worship. Today, an altar is a place of worship, praise , thanksgiving and consecration to God.
The first thing Noah did when he disembarked from the ark was not to build himself a shelter, neither was it to go looking for food for the family and the animals ! The first thing he did was to build an altar to the Lord. He took every clean bird and every clean animal and offered it to God. And God smelled a soothing aroma and made a declaration ; “I WILL NEVER AGAIN CURSE THE GROUND FOR MAN’S SAKE NOR WILL I EVER AGAIN DESTROY EVERY LIVING THING AS I HAVE DONE”.
When you go through good times and hard times, always remember to raise an altar of sacrifice, praise and thanksgiving to the Lord . After God has delivered you from ” the jaws of a lion” , calamity, a difficult season of your life, thou shall not forget to raise an altar to the Lord. That altar ( place of access to God) can be your car, your house, your working place, the church etc. This is where we meet God for divine intervention .
