Psa 71:5-6 For you are my hope,
O Lord God. You are my trust
from my youth. By you I have been upheld from birth. You are the one who took me from my mother’s womb. My praise will continually
be of you.
9 Do not reject me in the time of old age;do not forsake me when my strength fails.
The author was getting old and he wrote from the perspective of an old man who was in a dire need of God’s help. He gives a review of his relationship journey with God from birth to senility . God had been his hope in the years of his youth and he was still his hope as he aged. God had been his longtime trusted partner.
The psalmist asked God not to forsake him in his old age. As his strength depreciated, he was certain that Yahweh will remain his all time trusted partner who cannot forsake or change as shadows do.
All through life, other companions may abandon us, disappoint us, or lead us down the wrong path – but not the Lord. He is the most trustworthy guide we could have as pilgrims on a long journey. He cannot lie, he can only do good, and he is bound by the loving kindness that defines Him ( Ruth Chou Simons).
